More Tid Bits

Well, it's that kind of night, I guess. Random stuff you find on the Internet and it amuses you, and must be shared.

Another gem from the purveyors of geek over at ThinkGeek.com. Have you seen the wall graphics that are popular for the young people? I'm going to live in the delusion that they come off as easily as advertised, because it's a great idea and relatively easy/quick/cheap way to decorate a room.

Anyway, I've started seeing some cool wall graphics that could be on the walls of big kids with disposable income. I'm just sayin'...

Geek Food

I love geek-related food. There are some really creative people out there doing fun things with food. I feel a little guilty about the prospect of eating it, but if I had it in front of me, I won't lie, I would scarf it right down. After at least taking a picture.

Death Star Watermelon via Laughing Squid:

QR Code cupcake via Boing Boing (you can actually scan these and it directs to Montreal Science Centre):

Super Mario cake via Rare Unlimited:

I wish I was talented enough to make this cake; I know my husband would love it for his birthday! Where's that community college schedule...

I think I might do a whole series on just this topic. I have some pics of nerdy bento boxes that I started collecting one day while surfing Google images.

Amigurumi = Cute!

Thanks to good ol' Wikipedia, I learned what "amigurumi" means, other than ridiculously cute.

Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. The word is derived from a combination of the Japanese words ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi, meaning stuffed doll.

There were two BoingBoing posts this week featuring nerd-inspired arigurumi, both inciting me to "Awwwww" at my monitor. That's how I know they are good. I also am reminded that I need to start knitting and/or crocheting again. Maybe after I move. And start volunteering. And learn how to race a dragonboat. You see where this is going. Sigh...

Anyway, enjoy some cute toys.

Valentines for the Geek in Your Life

Valentine's Day isn't a big deal in our house, but I know there are geeks out there who would love a treat from their special someone. Assuming he/she has one. Let's be optimistic and assume that's the case so I can get on with the point.

The good folks over at Mashable posted a list of 10 V-Day gifts for geeks earlier today. I can't decide which I like more -- the Valentine's themed Zune (yes, I said "Zune"!) or the Geeky Dreamboat magnet set, which includes adora-geeks like Michael Cera, Andy Samberg, and the dudes from Flight of the Conchords.

ThinkGeek.com has an even lengthier list of geek appropriate Valentine gifts here. I like the heart-shaped box of mini-microbes (including Amoeba and Penicillin), Star Trek cologne & perfume (because who doesn't want to smell like Captain Kirk?), Circuit board necklace (doubles as a "Green" gift!), and the LED binary clock or watch (which I doubt I could even read, but love nonetheless).

Of course, you could make it easy and pick up a cool geek t-shirt. There are so many now, because I guess it is finally cool to be a geek or pretend you are one. Pretty much anything from threadless.com seems on target, but I really like this one because of the overwhelming number of pop culture references in one shirt. Or the now (in)famous Rock-Paper-Scissor-Lizard-Spock t-shirt from the Big Bang Theory. Or for the gamer geek in your life, any number of Mario t-shirts.

If you don't have a special Valentine in your life this year, go on and treat yourself. You know you want to. Shiny!!
